Metamorphosis

Weaving is an ancient art. Plastic bags are a contemporary menace. Chintan's Metamorphosis initiative worked with wastepicker women to transform waste plastic bags into beautiful new products.

In partnership with the Maurya Sheraton and Towers, Delhi and the Centre for Environmental Education (CEE), we installed a loom to weave old plastic bags into a unique fabric. The fabric was used to create long-lasting bags for more sustainable lifestyles.

This initiative ensured that flimsy, disposable plastic bags were removed from drains, garbage dumps and landfills and got a second, far longer life. Equally important, it helped wastepicker families enhance their income.

The project was terminated when the Delhi Government banned plastic bags.
