Low Carbon Futures

The vast quantity of waste that is the result of modern lifestyles—especially of the affluent—is one of the causes of greenhouse gas emissions. Even in a developing country like India, poor waste management contributes to over 3% of the country's total greenhouse gas emissions. This is because despite the fact that a majority of Indians live in poverty, there is a huge and growing middle class (over 300 million by recent statistics) that is consuming more, often indiscriminately, and producing more waste than ever before.

What Chintan Does

• The Low Carbon Futures programme reminds us that India is a country where it is possible to live well and still consume sensibly and sustainably.  (Read this blog on the Huffington Post to understand the idea better.)
• As part of the Low Carbon Futures programme, we work with bulk waste producers—offices, factories and other large organizatons—to green their procurement and reduce wastage. We also collect and recycle their waste, instead of letting it emit greenhouse gases in landfills.
• Our clients include shopping malls, offices, hotels, railway stations and guesthouses. In each case, we first focus on efficient waste handling and then work backwards to green their procurement. We do this by creating awareness among employees, doing regular waste audits, and working with the administration and HR departments to institutionalize the change.

Help Stop Generation of 10 Million Extra Plastic Bags through Flawed Packaging

Prevention of malaria is a very important step for the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare but the concern for the environment should not be left behind. The Ministry has floated a tender for 10 million mosquito bed nets and each net has to be packed in plastic bags. If the plans continue, this tender will create waste of 10 million plastic bags with insecticide contamination equal to approximately 500 MT of waste for the rural India. Read more >
